What exactly is an orphaned user

Forgive me if the answer is staring me in the face, but I searched codeplex and google to give me a description of an orphaned user.

I am assuming it is any user on the site that is no longer in Active Directory? and when you click on the users name in SharePoint it does not go to the User Profile because it no longer exists?

Also, I have found that testing, some users that are removed from the Site Collection are still with the company with the same username (and exist in AD).  Could it be that they are flagged for removal because they don't have permissions to any sites in the site collection?

As the source code suggests, orphans are valid users that have no profile in the Shared Service Provider (User Profile Database), you know the http://ssp.company.com/profiles/Person.aspx?...=DOMAIN\UserName
