Release Notes

What is it?

The Import Files Utility is an application that will let you import files into a SharePoint library, from a local or remote Windows path. It has a recursive option that will create an entire tree structure of child folders, and populate the child folders with any files within them. It also has an option to make the names of the files and folders "web safe". For example, if there is an ampersand (&) in your file name, it will replace it with an underscore (_).

How to use:

This application must be run on your local SharePoint server. The usage is as follows:

-source The directory path for the source files.
-destination The SharePoint URL where the files will be imported to.
{-recursive} Create a tree structure of child folders, and populate with any items. (optional)
{-replace} Replace any non-safe characters with an underscore. (optional)
{-debug} Creates a file called debug.txt with detailed information to help troubleshooting. (optional)

*Added a -debug option. This will create a file called debug.txt that provides detailed information to help troubleshooting.

March 2, 2009
*In the -replace option, I added a fix to replace double periods a file name. It will replace the double periods with a single period. Example: myfile..txt will become myfile.txt
*The tool can now import directly into any folder within a document library instead of just the root document library. This was a problem when your source location had subfolders and the destination location was a child folder within a library.
*Made a few other code enhancements that does not change any functionality.
